Spread some cheer by making Christmas a little brighter for local families
The team at Chorlton charity Reach Out to the Community, led by Steph Moore (who also gives her time as Co-chair of Chorlton Traders) is gearing up for a very busy winter.
“It’s been a challenging year, but winter is especially tough for people and families who have trouble making ends meet,” says Steph. “If you don’t have enough for the basics – let alone enough for little treats and presents – Christmas can feel very cold.”
Best known for giving help to homeless people, Reach Out to the Community also make up parcels for local families referred to them by Social Services and partner support agencies.
This Christmas, they’re asking for your help – and it’s as simple as putting a few more items in your shopping trolley, or adding an extra child to your Christmas shopping list.
“We’re always after non-perishable food: the usual items – pasta, rice, tins etc – but because it’s Christmas, we’d also love to be able to send out chocolates, mince pies, biscuits, cakes, advent calendars, selection boxes and other treats.”
“Think too, of children and the sort of stocking filler type gifts they might like to receive – small toys, art materials and sweets.
“We make up gift bags for a local young women’s hostel too, so make-up, smellies, notebooks, socks and other small gifts would go down well. We make sure that every single gift finds its way to someone who will appreciate it.”
So spare a thought for our Chorlton neighbours that Christmas so often leaves behind. Drop food and gifts off at the Reach Out shop at 488 Wilbraham Road, or you can donate money online.
The team will be collecting outside Morrisons during the first week in December
