The perfect roast potatoes are a vital part of Christmas – and who better to give us the lowdown than Chorlton’s Unicorn Grocery Coop?

Stu, Claire and Geo - they know their spuds,

Unicorn LOVE their spuds.  Baked, Mashed, Chipped and at this time of year, they are very keen on Roasted.  In fact they have an annual roasted spud night where they cook, taste and rate the best of the season, so they can advise us customers on choosing the best.

Unicorn buy direct from their UK growers and get the sacks straight onto the shop floor, where at any time you will find around eight types of the most affordable and tasty organic spuds in town –  currently at 59p/lb.

Did you know?

In December, our friends at Unicorn sell around 254 sacks of potatoes? That’s more than six tonnes  (6,355kg, if you’re asking). More than half of this tonnage is sold during Christmas week! Amazing!

Unicorn's Rough Guide to Roasties

The best roasting technique in the world won’t pay off unless you have the right variety of potato – so here are the spuds that came out top in Unicorn’s Roaste Potato Taste Tests. Keep your eyes peeled (sorry) for:

Carolus

The flouriest variety Unicorn sells, Carolus crisps up beautifully whilst the centres are a lovely light and fluffy texture without being too dry. Staff favourite again!

Picasso

Creamy and smooth, with melt-in-the-mouth moist insides, makes for a satisfying roasty!

Alouette

Soft and moist fluffy innards with a mildly nutty flavour that crisps up pleasingly on the outside.

Maris Piper

The classic spud that crisps and crunches up really nicely, whilst having a good balance inside of moist and fluffy. Nice flavour with a hint of earthiness.
